Its History

Back in 1977, the Hurricane Seafood Restaurant embarked on its journey, welcoming guests within the premises of the former Casa Bonita Hotel in Pass-A-Grille Beach. This historical location had once been home to Page’s Pavilion, a bath house erected in 1912. Though the hotel’s presence diminished during the 1960s, a solitary vestige remained as a testament to its legacy.

Seizing this heritage-rich spot, the Falkenstein family from Baltimore took the reins and envisioned a restaurant that would breathe new life into the remaining relic.

The Falkensteins established a compact kitchen and bar, presenting a concise selection of ten cherished items from their hometown, which included delectable offerings such as fresh wild grouper, bisque, and clam chowder. In 1986, an expansion on the ground floor introduced outdoor seating, enhancing the dining experience.

As the Hurricane’s reputation flourished, the Falkensteins’ vision expanded. In 1989, they embarked on a new venture, elevating the establishment by adding another level. This innovative addition provided patrons with an entirely fresh vantage point to relish the awe-inspiring sunsets of St. Pete Beach.

Over four decades have passed, and the Hurricane remains a sought-after haven, drawing in not only St. Pete Beach natives but also tourists. The Falkenstein family upholds the reins of the restaurant, where timeless classics like “Mom’s 1945 Crab Cake Melt” endure as a treasured part of the original menu—a cherished family recipe passed down through three generations.
